Bing to Roll out Its Own Mobile-Friendly Ranking Algorithm

After Google, it is Bing which has announced to roll out its own Mobile-Friendly Algorithm. Though the exact date when the update will affect mobile searches has not been announced yet.

Unlike Google, Bing mobile search will maintain a balance between the mobile-friendliness and the relevance to the search query. It means that, the pages which are not mobile-friendly can still be shown in search result if they contain the information most relevant to the user’s query, where Google straight away excludes non mobile-friendly pages.

Bing is also offering webmaster tool to test the mobile-friendliness of the pages, just like Google did. To be a mobile-friendly website the navigation should easily be touched and the content should be readable without zooming or scrolling horizontally. The pop-ups and other factors will also be considered while labeling the page mobile-friendly.

How will Bing check Mobile-Friendliness?

Bing will be releasing a tool to test the mobile-friendliness of web pages. Also, Bing has mentioned the criteria for ranking mobile-friendly pages. These are:

  1. Navigation:
  2. The menus, buttons and links should be large enough to touch with a finger and they should also be spaced out well so the wrong link does not get clicked.

  3. Readability:
  4. The content should be easily readable without zooming or scrolling left to right. The text size, font and line height should be in such a way the user has no difficulty to read on small screen.

  5. Scrolling:
  6. The content should fit well within the screen. As scrolling horizontally to read the content is not a rich user experience.

  7. Compatibility:
  8. The content such as images or videos should be compatible with the device. The videos should be easily viewable on mobile. The page with flash is likely not to be shown in search result as the flash is not mobile compliant and mobile devices do not render it.
